Battle Born Progress Statement on Adam Laxalt’s Star Wars Themed Senate Announcement

NEVADA – This week former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt announced his official decision to run for U.S. Senate with a Star Wars themed video on Twitter. Following this announcement, Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress issued this statement:

“Only in Nevada can a failed gubernatorial candidate announce a run for U.S. Senate by  comparing the upcoming election to Star Wars. Adam Laxalt’s announcement video compared Democrats to the ‘Empire’ and likened the 2022 election to the battle from the popular film series. His lacking grasp on the plot and players in this cultural staple is rivaled only by how little he knows about governing. Laxalt lacks any meaningful ideas about policies that will move Nevada forward. Were he to stumble across one, he lacks the wherewithal and ability to effectively implement or execute on behalf of real Nevadans. His radical rhetoric serves one purpose: to rile up his base. Nevadans must remember that Laxalt is a carpetbagger who disrespects women by refusing to call them by their actual names and titles, who continues to peddle lies about the 2020 election–including that it should be overturned despite having no evidence, and a reliable toadie to Donald Trump throughout his presidency. In fact, Laxalt has become such a reliable Trump lackey, he’s now known as ‘the face of Trump’s baseless election fraud lawsuits.’

As Attorney General, Laxalt refused to implement background checks which were voted on by the people of Nevada. He refused to implement the will of the people and do his job. In fact, Laxalt’s most notable accomplishment is that he abused his authority as Attorney General in an attempt to stifle a lawsuit against Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson. He was caught in the act, on tape. The violation was so egregious he was asked to recuse himself.

Abusing power and trust is a regular theme for Adam Laxalt. In testament to his debilitating Koch-money dependency, when he was given the opportunity to once again violate the trust of Nevadans or serve his dark money donors–Adam chose the Koch-money and attempted to derail an investigation into his corporate masters shady dealings. The Koch brothers returned the favor by funneling piles of dark money into his failed run for Governor in 2018. Putting the interests of his billionaire donors above regular Nevadans is the one thing we can always expect from Adam Laxalt.

When Adam Laxalt had the chance to prove himself, he protected his friends–powerful, rich and elite–while ignoring the Nevadans who elected and trusted him. Adam Laxalt violated the trust of Nevadans multiple times, and we haven’t forgotten. Laxalt does not represent the values of Nevadans, and we will be here to hold him accountable just like we did in 2018. Make no mistake that under the thumb of Adam Laxalt, as we continue to navigate an unprecedented global pandemic, Nevadans will be forced to return to the failed and dangerous policies that we suffered through for the last four years. To put it in his words: Adam Laxalt is wrong for Nevada.”
