Nevada – On September 12, 2021, the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee released information on how they will raise revenue to pay for President Biden’s Build Back Better Agenda. Organizations advocating for this agenda released the following statements:
Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, stated: “This mark-up by the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee is a critical first step in accomplishing the basic goal of Build Back Better – rewarding hard work and ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share. The over $2 trillion that would be raised from the wealthy and corporations is a good down payment for the future of our country’s hard-working families who have suffered during this pandemic and are in need of what is outlined in Biden’s Build Back Better agenda. From lowering taxes for families through Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit, and dependent care tax credit to save seniors and workers money on prescriptions by enabling Medicare to negotiate lower prices, and much more, this plan is what America needs right now.”
Yadira Siqueiros, Care in Action Nevada State Director, said: “We have a once-in-a-generation chance to ensure we build infrastructure and an economy that works for all — once that prioritizes the roads, bridges, and broadband we rely on, as well as long-term care services working families and our aging population need. Both are possible with President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda, and the House Ways and Means Committee’s Tax Plan is one of our tickets to the equitable and transformative change Nevadans need in this time of crisis. These urgent issues that our residents face require bold solutions and investments — and these solutions shouldn’t come at the expense of the families and individuals — domestic workers, care workers, women of color — who are the first impacted in any economic crisis and the last to receive support.”
“Nevadans are facing big problems and President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda proposes big solutions,” said Gariety Pruitt, Nevada State Director of For Our Future Action Fund. “For too long, tax laws have benefited the wealthy and corporations while allowing America’s infrastructure and its middle class to crumble. We applaud Congressman Steven Horsford, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, for driving legislation that will ensure those at the top pay their fair share and reinvest it not only in our nation’s roads and bridges but in America’s working families.”
Taylor Patterson, Executive Director of Native Voters Alliance of Nevada, said: “While corporations and the ultra-wealthy have seen their wealth soar during the COVID-19 pandemic, working-class families have been crushed. The House Ways and Means Committee’s Tax Plan brings equity to these communities. President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda will put working-class communities, including Indigenous communities, before profits.”
One APIA Executive Director, Duy Nguyen, said: “The Build Back Better Act is the boldest investment in our future generations. Tens of thousands of hardworking Asian and Pacific Islander American families in Nevada will benefit for years to come. It funds clean energy, supports small businesses, and expands childcare. These changes are long overdue and we applaud Congressman Steven Horsford, a member of the Ways and Means Committee for continuing to advocate for our community.”
Laura Martin, Executive Director of PLAN Action, said: “President Biden’s ambitious Build Back Better agenda is a step in the right direction to put people and the planet first by making historic investments in a just transition to a clean and renewable energy economy, and deeply needed infrastructure projects including childcare and immigration. The BBB also does what is long overdue: making corporations and the super-wealthy pay their fair share, instead of placing these costs on the backs of working and middle-class families who have borne the brunt of the pandemic and counterproductive Trump administration. We can ensure our country builds back better, and all Nevadans are able to thrive in dignity.”
