NEVADA – Today, President Joe Biden issued executive orders to publish model legislation for states, direct the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to study firearm trafficking, place restrictions on stabilizing braces which turn pistols into rifles, invest in community violence intervention programs, and to regulate “ghost guns”, or home-assembled firearm kits. He also formally introduced David Chipman as his nominee to lead the ATF.

“We are grateful to see President Biden live up to his promise for action on gun violence prevention,” said Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress. “As vaccinations increase, and capacity restrictions in public start to loosen, the sad side effect has been a recent wave of mass shootings that serve as a grim reminder of the continually unaddressed epidemic of gun violence in America.”

“Today, the President took decisive action to direct executive agencies to invest in communities, regulate weapon modifications used to side-step the law, and to curtail the availability of ghost guns, or untraceable, unregulated kits used primarily to circumvent firearm laws and commit violent crimes. In Nevada, our legislature is currently considering similar plans to outlaw these dangerous devices thanks to the leadership of Assemblywoman Sandra Jauregui with Assembly Bill 286. We encourage the Nevada Legislature to observe President Biden’s action today as a signal that now is the time to stop the sale of these unserialized weapon kits.”

“Finally, his nomination of David Chipman to lead the ATF is another welcome sign that this administration takes gun violence prevention seriously. With Chapman’s background as senior policy advisor at Giffords, one of our strongest gun safety allies, we are confident that he will bring policy changes at the Bureau that will help make our communities safe from gun violence. Real leadership at the ATF is long overdue and Chipman has his work cut out to address this gun violence epidemic.”
