LAS VEGAS, NV –  Battle Born Progress has released its 2021 Nevada Progress Report, which grades each state Senator and Assembly member based on their votes for or against the organization’s priority legislation during the 81st Legislative Session. Each lawmaker has been given a percentage score determined by votes in favor of legislation supported by Battle Born Progress. The Progress Report was officially released during the organization’s virtual Legislative Wrap-up event, held this evening.

Battle Born Progress Executive Director, Annette Magnus, issued the following statement:

“On the day of our Legislative Wrap-Up, we are proud to release our 2021 Nevada Progress Report, which represents our organization’s definitive evaluation of the 81st Legislative Session as a whole. This session brought some groundbreaking progressive victories in the form of bills strengthening voting rights, banning ghost guns, creating the Nevada Public Option, growing Nevada’s clean energy economy, and finally beginning to tax mining to raise revenue for Nevada. This happened thanks to the leadership of Governor Steve Sisolak, Speaker of the Assembly Jason Frierson, and Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, who met, and exceeded, the somewhat tempered expectations for this mid-pandemic session in many policy areas.”

“However, there were also a few issues where the Governor and Legislature failed to deliver on urgently needed priorities, leaving work undone for future sessions to inherit. Among these, the abrupt move to kill the death penalty abolition bill was a significant lowlight of the session. Additionally, more needed to be done this session to address affordable housing, and to expand tenant protections. The Legislature punted on the bill to require responsible energy planning for gas utilities, despite it being necessary under the Governor’s climate plan for the state. And we were also disappointed to see the new education funding formula still leave out educator input in designing an equitable funding system for all public schools in the state.”

“While we recognize there is still much work to be done in these areas, and hold all of our leaders to account, we commend the Governor, Speaker Frierson, and Majority Leader Cannizzaro for their efforts this session to move Nevada in the right direction. This year’s Progress Report grades legislators based on their voting record on bills we supported. We look forward to getting to work on the implementation process for many of the important bills that passed, and towards the redistricting process in the Fall. We intend to work with lawmakers and our community to ensure the issues where this session fell short are taken up in a bold way throughout the interim and in 2023.”
