LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, newly sworn-in President Joe Biden signed several Executive Orders related to climate and environmental protection, reversing many of outgoing President Donald Trump’s orders and executive actions related to the environment.
Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, said:
“We celebrate President Biden taking action immediately to protect our public lands and take on climate change, including pausing oil and gas leasing, committing to protect 30% of the nation’s land and water by 2030, and restoring and expanding access to our outdoor spaces. Under the Trump administration, climate change was ignored, and our public lands were ransacked by oil and gas corporations. Biden’s actions today put us back on the right track. We welcome this new, bold leadership to prevent and mitigate climate change, invest in our communities, and preserve our public lands for generations to come.
We are pleased by President Biden’s decision to fix our oil and gas leasing regime by pausing leasing on for the first time in 40 years. This is part of a shift away from environmental degradation and pollution caused by fossil fuels and towards renewable energy. His orders also include a goal for the next decade to conserve 30% of U.S. land, water, and wildlife, specifically working with tribal governments, community leaders, and rural communities to keep our public lands protected. Even further, Biden’s order to reverse Trump’s damaging and illegal actions that desecrated sacred land, and instead work to preserve these outdoor spaces shows he is serious about conservation efforts. For Nevada, and for the country, it is good to have a president who values our public lands and who believes climate change is real and is willing to take real action to prevent and mitigate it.”
