LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died at age 87 of pancreatic cancer.

Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, issued the following:

“This is a devastating loss. It is difficult to find the words to describe how much of a giant and historic figure Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was for gender equality and fair-mindedness on our Supreme Court. This woman defined the word tough; persevering through institutional sexism, four cancer diagnoses, and several surgeries over her long, distinguished career. She was a role-model for countless American women, including me, and broke barriers that paved the way for us to stand proudly on her shoulders and continue the fight. We wish her to rest in both peace and in power. And we promise to fight to uphold and continue all the progress she worked for in her long life.”

“What comes next is the fight of our lives to stop Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell from desecrating Justice Ginsburg’s legacy by trying to fill her vacancy with a narrow-minded stooge of corporate and far-right interests. McConnell has already indicated he intends to hold a vote for a Trump nominee, cynically changing his tune about filling Supreme Court vacancies during an election year from 2016. No doubt, he will prioritize adding another rubber-stamp for Trump’s agenda to the Court over any additional pandemic relief for the American people. It was reported that Justice Ginsburg wished before she passed that she should only be replaced after ‘a new President is installed’. We urge our Senators to honor that wish and be an obstacle to any Trump nominee before an inauguration, especially given the extraordinarily unimpressive list he put forward earlier this month.”
