Supreme Court delivers victory for LGBTQ+ Americans during Pride Month

LAS VEGAS, NV – This morning, the Supreme Court of the United States released its opinion in the case of Bostock v. Clayton County concerning the right of LGBTQIA+ employees’ protection under Title VII anti-discrimination law. Justice Neil Gorsuch authored the majority 6-3 opinion, which also covered a pair of other similar cases heard during the same period, and affirming that gay, lesbian, and transgender workers’ ability to sue for employment discrimination.

Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress said the following:

“Today is a major victory for equality. The LGBTQIA+ community should not live with the fear that they could be fired or discriminated against at their place of work. Coming on the heels of Trump’s horrific executive rule allowing discrimination in matters of healthcare, the SCOTUS sent a clear message today that federal law DOES apply to cases in which LGBTQIA+ Americans are fired simply for who they are, and may sue to recoup damages. Bigotry has no place in our modern society, and while our country is in the midst of upending white supremacy among our nation’s governmental institutions, we must remember that two transgender black women, Riah Milton and Dominique Fells, were murdered just in the last week. However, this ruling marks progress in upholding basic rights and protections for our LGBTQIA+ friends, families, and communities. Today’s decision honors Aimee Stephens, one of the plaintiffs, who tragically passed away before she could see today’s victory. It’s also encouraging that Justices Gorsuch and Roberts defied partisan expectations, stood up for civil rights, and joined the majority opinion today. We hope they can summon the same compassion for DREAMERs who anxiously await their decision on Trump’s disastrous and racist decision to end DACA.”
